ALEX JAMES

(b. 1969, Bristol, UK)

Born and raised in Bristol, Alex James moved to the Dordogne, France in 2014.

James studied Graphic Design at Brunel College, Bristol and went on to jobs in advertising, book illustration and as a medical artist, sculptor and model maker.

Travel inspired him to start painting in his spare time. Trips to New York, South East Asia, and East and South Africa all gave him the ideas and material to work with. ‘Reflections on a Bank’ and ‘Broad and Pearl’ from his New York series were exhibited at the Royal West of England Academy in 2004, and then at the Washington Gallery in Cardiff.

James began working alongside his father, Gary James, an artist who has exhibited with Everard Read Gallery, Johannesburg for many years. In 2007 and 2011 they had ‘Father and Son’ shows at the Johannesburg gallery.

James has produced a number of paintings inspired by Africa. He works in acrylic on panel, with hand-carved cedar wood frames.
