About the exhibition:
John Meyer, has spent his life observing and celebrating the landscapes, skies and seas of our world through his work.
The paintings in this new collection illuminate the majesty and ephemeral beauty of our planet, including, Antarctica and the Amazon, the Maasai Mara Plains, Patagonia and the Norwegian fjords, presenting his - and perhaps our - memory of landscape, and how it feels, or might feel, to be in these places.
As Friederich Schiller noted in the 19th century, amid the early industrial revolution, “as nature begins gradually to vanish from human life, so we see it emerge in the world of the poet as an idea”.
This new collection of paintings is a poignant love poem to planet Earth, one which Meyer has been writing in increments for more than half a century, and which has culminated in these soaring vistas that capture the magnitude and wonder of the natural world, as well as the built environment. They are also vanishing landscapes and in that sense are, one fears, an epitaph for a fragile world.
