Everard Read London presents an exhibition of new landscapes and seascape paintings by South African artist, Walter Voigt.
The son of artist parents, Voigt’s technical ability, coupled with a passion for sky and landscape, enables him to evoke the elements of light, space, air and movement. His atmospheric paintings invite contemplation and act as visual meditations on colour, light and form. Voigt's paintings are the embodiment of a deep knowledge, love and reverence for the natural world.
“I try to capture a sense of the place,” says the artist. “The experience of timelessness and natural beauty. It’s the combination of elements that inspires me. Not only in a visual sense but a mix of all the senses. Having recently moved to the sea from the bush, I would have expected an obvious shift to occur. One cannot help but be absorbed by the ocean's energy and the light that falls on a particular wave or rock. This might inspire any landscape painter to want to paint it.”
Voigt notes that, “To be living near the ocean does make for better seascape paintings, but it doesn't affect my passion for landscapes. Both are equally alluring. However, I do find it better to work on the seascapes separately from the landscapes. They evoke different feelings, and for me it’s best to sustain that feeling on that subject rather than to alternate between the two. Their treatment is still the same, and I constantly aim to find a good brushwork balance of looseness and control.... whilst at the same time evoking an emotional expression.”
Voigt’s paintings are constructed with broad, energetic strokes and there is a vigorous, scratchy quality to his work, achieved with a palette knife and oil bar, in addition to the brush.
