ERIN CHAPLIN | Solo Exhibition
19 June - 18 July
Everard Read London presents a collection of new paintings by South African artist, Erin Chaplin.
Chaplin is a self-taught artist whose work has evolved from still life and portraiture, to encompass abstract painting as part of her practice - free from the expectations of figurative work.
She finds still life, particularly flowers and fruit, to be a powerful way to explore the fleeting nature of time and the balance between life and death. “Still lifes resonates with me because it’s ‘on the clock’,” say Chaplin. “Flowers and fruit can be arranged and painted to live forever but they will die and rot. This comforts me. I don't want anything to be too perfect or too alive because that’s not realistic.”
Vulnerability is a key element of Chaplin’s art, and she feels unmasked when releasing it into the world. Her creative process is driven by emotion, often influenced by the music she plays in the studio. A work feels complete when it reflects her inner state.
This is Erin Chaplin’s first solo presentation with Everard Read London.
