The work of South African artist, Gerhard Marx, featured at a symposium at the Courtauld Institute in London in June 2023. 'The Art and Architecture of Mapping: Visual and Material Approaches to Cartographic Objects' foregrounded such questions as: how do maps operate as representations, and how do culturally situated understandings of space shape how they are created, seen and read.

Speaker Susan Elizabeth Gagliardi (Associate Professor of Art History, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia) argued that 'Marx calls into question the fixity and specificity of maps and invites the viewer to reflect on what maps are and what we expect from them.'

Marx’s work will feature in Everard Read London’s Summer 2023 Exhibition which opens in mid-July and continues until early September 2023.
