Teresa Kutala Firmino exhibits at the Torreão Nascente da Cordoaria Nacional, Lisbon
July 26, 2025
Everard Read is thrilled to announce that Teresa Kutala Firmino’s work will be exhibited in Lisbon as part of the exhibition From the surrounds, we build the present, alongside artists such as Yinka Shonibare and William Kentridge. The exhibition is a collaboration between the FAS Collection and the Galerias Municipais/EGEAC.
Curated by Cindy Sissokho, From the surrounds, we build the present explores moments of freedom produced by the creative interactions between people and their everyday environments. Giving aesthetic form to the negotiations between human and non-human surrounds, the exhibition works attend to the need and opportunities for ongoing mutual transformation.
Teresa Kutala Firmino is a multimedia artist based in Johannesburg, working with paint, photography and performance. Her work negotiates trauma, both personal and collective, in everyday life. Often weaving together narratives of the past and present, Firmino uses carefully collected images from magazines, newspapers, historical documents and social media to form and inspire her work. This process produces relationships and tension between disparate materials, creating the space for Firmino to suggest alternative narratives for the archive and future of African history.
The exhibition at the Torreão Nascente da Cordoaria Nacional opened last week and continues until November. Click here to read more about the exhibition on their gallery website. Click here to learn more about Teresa Kutala Firmino on our website.
