Sannell Aggenbach opens Neo Nature Solo Exhibition at Everard Read Johannesburg

"a heavy numbness seized her limbs, thin bark closed over her breast, her hair turned into leaves, her arms into branches, her feet so swift a moment ago stuck fast in slow-growing roots, her face was lost in the canopy.
- the transformation of Daphne, from Ovid’s Metamorphoses (8AD)
Aggenbach's new series of works explores the fundamental forces of change and the relationship between power and vulnerability. In a time where our natural world and political landscape are not merely experiencing disruption and change; they are facing a sustained assault from unscrupulous world leaders and ill-advised lobbyists.
She explores the concept of change through her depiction of recognisable and resilient natural objects. She adopts the underlying message of Ovid's Metamorphoses; that nothing is permanent and everything, from power and beauty to the natural world is ever-changing.
She states that NeoNature is her "contemporary response to the state of our world today. It is rooted in the wonder of the natural world, but with a twist. Sculptures become placeholders for new hybrids, while paintings take the form of pseudo-scientific studies. This body of work is an amalgamation of wonder, humour and concern, and reflects on the importance of safeguarding creativity and culture in the face of an emerging AI revolution."
One of her works from this new body, Monster Deliciosa, features bronze arrows piercing a drooping monstera to the wall.
This work recently appeared on Artsy's 'Fashion is Art' feature. Exploring the relationship between the two crafts, the deep blue stuffed and pierced fabric of the plant is exemplar of textile art's relationship with fashion and fabric.
