Everard Read London presents Remixes and B-Sides an exhibition showcasing an all-female group of artists who mine Modernism for its recognisable tropes and, through satire, reinterpretation and calculated irreverence, repurpose them as tools of critique.
Drawing on the visual and conceptual languages of early to mid-century Modern Art, the exhibition reclaims aesthetic territories that have traditionally been enshrined within male-dominated art historical narratives.
These works are not acts of imitation, but of revision - challenging inherited ideas surrounding authorship, innovation and artistic authority. Through bold colour, distortion and deliberate exaggeration, the artists employ subtle satire as a means of exposing the ways universities, museums and cultural institutions have traditionally framed Modernism as a singular, heroic narrative led almost exclusively by men.
For generations, women artists have too often appeared in the margins of this story: as muses, footnotes, exceptions or supporting characters. By appropriating and transforming the languages of Modernism, the artists claim authorship over a visual tradition that has historically claimed authority without them.
